Indian Folk Tales is built for reading together. Here is how to get the most out of the library with your children.
Finding the right story
Many stories carry a suggested age range. Start with the age-group collections: ages 3–5, ages 6–8, ages 9–12 and all ages. The range reflects how long the story is, how hard the words are and how scary or complicated it gets. You know your child best, so treat it as a starting point. Some darker tales are intended for older readers and have no child age-group label; they remain accessible through the general story index and related links.
- Ages 3–5: start with brief tales and preview the ending; short does not always mean gentle.
- Ages 6–8: look for manageable language and discuss deception, danger or unfair treatment together.
- Ages 9–12: longer or more complex tales, some with death, frightening events or difficult family relationships; read the page’s guidance first.
If you want a story about a particular value, try browsing by theme, such as kindness, honesty or courage.
A word about old stories
Folk tales were not written for modern children. Even in our retellings, wolves eat people, tricksters lie and kings can be cruel. Some versions include violence, coercion, prejudice or grief. Read the entire story before sharing it with a young or sensitive child, including the ending and reading guidance. You can choose another tale, stop reading or discuss why a character’s conduct is harmful; a traditional ending need not be endorsed.
Talking about the story
Discussion prompts invite readers to explain their interpretations using details from the tale. Plot questions can have a definite answer, while questions about fairness can support several well-reasoned responses. Asking “What would you have done?” or “Was that fair?” is a good way to start. Comparing a tale from India with a similar one from another country, using the related stories at the bottom of the page, can lead to great conversations too.
Screens and privacy
